Sports Hub

Executive Summary

Sports Hub is an Android app that lets users track scores, schedules, and news for NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL teams, with the unique ability to personalize the app’s theme based on their favorite team.

Faced with high user drop-off during the initial walkthrough, I was tasked with redesigning this onboarding experience. The goal was to create an intuitive, engaging, and seamless setup process that encourages users to complete onboarding, explore key features, and boost long-term retention and engagement.

Bringing Fans Closer: Modernizing SportsHub

The SportsHub Android app needed a modern, fan-focused redesign. I created an experience that was both intuitive and personal, centered around customization.

Users could now select favorite teams, personalize themes, and get content tailored to their interests turning SportsHub into a dynamic platform that adapts to each fan's passion.

Focus Areas:

  • User personalization through team selection and custom themes

  • Content relevance via tailored feeds and notifications

  • Streamlined navigation for a more intuitive experience

  • Emotional connection by aligning the app with users’ fandom

  • Modernized visual design to reflect current app standards and expectations

Standing Out in a Crowded Market

To modernize SportsHub, I began by diving into competitor research—examining popular sports apps like ESPN, theScore, Yahoo Sports, and CBS Sports. Each app had its own unique onboarding style: some fast and simple, others more detailed with extra features.

This research revealed a clear opportunity: while many apps focused on walkthrough length or features, none fully leveraged personalization as a core onboarding element.

By introducing team selection and theme customization right from the start, SportsHub could break away from the pack—offering users a tailored experience that reflected their passion for their favorite teams. This feature not only aligned with what users wanted but also gave SportsHub a unique advantage in a crowded market, making the app more engaging and memorable.

Designing the for Simplicity

When redesigning the SportsHub walkthrough, my goal was clear: remove friction and get users to the action fast. A long, clunky onboarding was leading to high drop-off rates, so I focused on creating a short, efficient experience that still delivered impact.

I started by sketching a simple three screen flow. The first welcomed users with a clean intro. The second invited them to select their favorite teams a quick step that unlocked meaningful personalization. The final screen let them choose a team based theme, visually tying their experience to the team they love.

This redesigned walkthrough made the app feel instantly personal and accessible, boosting engagement from the very first tap.

The Final Play

The redesigned SportsHub walkthrough gives fans exactly what they want speed, clarity, and personalization.

From a clean welcome screen with a bold Start button to a smooth, slide-based team selection, the experience feels intuitive and personal. Every choice customizes the feed, putting fans’ favorite teams front and center.

  • Fast, streamlined onboarding

  • Interactive team selection

  • Personalized content feeds

On the final screen, fans swipe through dynamic team themes. The app instantly updates colors, backgrounds, and UI to match team spirit.

  • Real-time visual transformation

  • Deeper emotional engagement

  • Brand-aligned interface

What was once a generic intro now builds instant connection and loyalty—turning casual users into lifelong fans.

Measuring Engagement

The redesigned app brought an immediate shift. The new, more intuitive onboarding encouraged users to slow down, explore, and personalize their experience.

Previously, most rushed through by selecting just one team. With the new flow, users engaged more deeply—selecting multiple teams and connecting with the app from the start.

This wasn’t just a visual refresh, it fundamentally changed how users interacted with the product.

Key Results:

  • 21% increase in average number of teams selected

  • Single-team selections dropped from 74% to 63%

  • Two-team selections rose from 8% to 13%

  • Users showed higher engagement and personalization during onboarding
